The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently launched a redesigned data.cms.gov website that makes it easier to discover, access, and understand CMS data.
Data.cms.gov gives you direct access to public data released by CMS. Their goal is to ensure that CMS data is readily available in open, accessible, and machine-readable formats. For most available data, you can:
Download data in a variety of formats.
View and analyze data using interactive tools.
Access data through an Application Programming Interface, or API. An API lets developers connect other applications to data in real time.
There are a plethora of reports available, but here are a few examples so you know what data you have access to:
CMS Beneficiary Characteristics: find out how many people are enrolled in Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage and Other Health Plans
Medicare Part D Prescriber Look-up Tool: This tool is a searchable database that allows you to look up a Medicare Part D prescriber and view their associated drugs.
Medicare Advantage & Other Health Plan Enrollment: Get information on Medicare Advantage & Other Health Plan enrollment by type of coverage, type of entitlement, demographic characteristics, and geography.
Interactive Atlas of Chronic Conditions: This tool shows the prevalence of 18 chronic conditions among beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare fee-for-service at the state and county levels.
